Schwungmasse

Die Schwungmasse ist die Masse eines Schwungrades, welches sich in Rotation befindet. Die Schwungmasse ist dabei ein Faktor, der bei der Berechnung der kinetischen Energie eines rotierenden Schwungrades entscheidend ist. Ein weiterer Faktor ist die Massenträgheit von Leonhard Euler, mit der sich errechnen lässt wie viel kinetische Energie die Schwungmasse des Schwungrades hat.

Ein rotierendes ist mit seiner Schwungmasse ein Energiespeicher dessen Speicherfunktionalität im Modellbau für Dampfmaschinen oder Heißluftmotoren, wie der , , auch genannt, oder der Ericssonmotor genutzt werden, da diese die Energie für zum Beispiel das Komprimieren der Luft liefert. Das wird im Modellbau, bei Fitnessgeräten oder auch bei Satteliten oder Raketen verwendet. Die Schwungmasse dient bei Flugobjekten als Stabilisator, auch Kreiselkompass genannt, um eine Stabilisation zu erreichen.

Die Schwungmasse hat die Eigenschaft Energie zu speichern, wenn sie symmetrisch um eine Achse angeordnet ist. Ist die Schwungmasse ungleichmäßig um die Achse verteilt, nimmt sie Energie auf und das bleibt stehen. Dies wird zum Beispiel in der Medizin angewandt um die Muskeln im Handgelenk zu stärken. Die Schwungmasse ist nicht nur in rotierenden Gegenständen zu finden.

So ist beispielsweise die kinetische Energie eines bremsenden Autos ebenfalls von dessen Masse beziehungsweise Schwungmasse abhängig. Je kleiner die Schwungmasse desto kleiner die kinetische Energie. Die kinetische Energie ist also proportional zur Schwungmasse.
