The Stirling engine "The big Laura" is similar in design to a horizontal plane engine of 1910. Like every Stirling engine, this lying air-cooled heat engine has two cylinders with pistons, the displacement cylinder and the working cylinder. The working cylinder is made of steel, the displacer cylinder is made of aluminum with a diameter of 60mm due to its better thermal conductivity. In addition, the displacement cylinder is also provided with cooling ribs in order to ensure the longest possible running time of the machine. Like its historical model, the hot air motor has a flywheel and a belt pulley.
The Stirling engine "The big Laura" is as one can already recognize by the name, a large version of our very successful material kit Stirling engine "Laura". The size of this model has some advantages. Due to its large area, the Stirling engine can better dissipate the heat and run longer. The tank of the Stirling engine "The big Laura" is extra large dimensioned. A fuel filling fuel range is 8-10 hours depending on the flame size. Furthermore, with this large Stirling engine significantly lower speeds are possible than with small model construction Stirling engines. But even high speeds are no problem for the model. The speed can be controlled by means of a setting wheel in this hot-air motor. The burner is firmly connected to the model and the base plate. On the drive shaft runs a 140mm flywheel and a pulley in our well-known cast steel quality. The working cylinder consists of a hydraulic cylinder tube and no longer has to be machined inside. The enclosed oak wood base plate is also pre-milled.
The construction plan and the construction instructions accompanying the Stirling engine are very comprehensive, detailed and easy to understand. For the model builder who has always wanted to build a large Stirling engine himself, the Stirling engine "The big Laura" is a well suited model.
Dimensions of the Stirling engine model
- Base plate: 255mm x 120mm
- Flywheel: 140mm
- Belt pulley: 56mm
- Overall height: 120mm
- Working piston: 30mm
- Displacement pistons: 35mm
- Overall length: 410mm
The material kit Stirling motor "The big Laura" is included in the delivery
- Machined wooden base plate
- Finished milled parts
- Brass, steel, stainless steel and silver steel raw material for the turned parts
- Cylinder sleeve made of hydraulic cylinder
- Flywheel and pulley made of cast steel
- All required screws, nuts, gaskets, maggot screws and wick
- Modelstirling "The large Laura" drawings (14 sheets) and building instructions (9 sheets)
All the materials, screws and accessories required to build the Stirling engine "The Big Laura" are included in the kit. All milling parts are prepared so far that they only have to be deburred and possibly drilled.
The construction of Stirling requires a medium-size lathing machine, a stator boring machine and a gas burner for brazing and soldering. Furthermore, there is still a hand tool which should be found in every "machine tool shop" (taps M2, M3, M4, A drill set is needed.
You can find a detailed construction report of this model in our Bengs model tree magazine. In the building report of the Stirling engine "The big Laura" you will find many pictures and explanatory texts. Thus, you can inform yourself in advance about the work to be done. But the construction report of the Stirling engine can also help you during construction.
